The Great Kitchen Cabinet Dilemma

March 2018

The Structural Engineer, Architect, and Designer are all logging in some hours trying to finalize the framing documents required for the general contractor and the county.  We are expecting those to be done by early to mid-April.  Fingers crossed it all works out and our contractor will begin construction in June!

Now, time for something fun.  And by fun, I mean painful - at least for me.  Narrowing down kitchen cabinet choices.  It sounds like it'd be exciting.  It is.  Except when you overanalyze your decisions and are terrible at picking colors.

I could use some input on the choices....so let the fun begin!

You might think we are jumping the gun in picking cabinets when we don't even have the finalized kitchen measurements yet.  And you might be right.  Except when there are some major sales going on.

IKEA's kitchen sale is going on thru early April.  If timing with the framing documents lines up, we could jump in at the very end of the sale.  Plus there's some trick that you can purchase an IKEA kitchen service during the sale (such as a kitchen measure), schedule that service outside the sale timeframe, and still get the sale pricing when it's time to order.  Don't quote me on that - go ask somebody wearing yellow and blue.

Showplace Cabinets has a sale going on thru early May on painted finishes.  We used Showplace for our master bath vanity in our main house and they are great.  They have a frameless cabinet line called Showplace EVO that we are considering for the cabin.  They aren't built quite as sturdy as their standard line, but still heavy duty.

Really, we need to decide whether we're going with IKEA, Showplace EVO painted cabinets, or Showplace EVO stained cabinets so not to miss the sale pricing.  There are pros and cons with each to consider, but for now let's judge these books by their covers.

Tidbits to know:
  • Overall design style would be Modern Rustic Scandinavian.  Yes, I know.  We can't decide a design scheme either.  It's a curse.  Just roll with it.
  • Currently doing only lower cabinets with maybe some open shelves.  Babe Vila can always add upper cabinets later if "we" feel we need more storage.
  • Cabinet face will either be a shaker (most likely) or slab style.
  • Looking at a butcher block countertop unless we stumble upon a smokin' deal on white granite or quartz.  Color of butcher block will be decided by the cabinet and flooring.
  • Stainless appliances.

Option #1:  IKEA Kallarp.  Glossy turquoise-gray.  Modern.  Will show every drip of water and I fear I may tire of the color within 5 years.  But such a gorgeous color.

Option #2:  IKEA Tingsryd.  Brown-Black grain.  Could show every fingerprint. And not really pulling the heart strings.

Now for the Showplace options.....

Option #4:  Showplace EVO Flagstone finish on Maple (top).  A true gray wash but is it too gray??

Option #5:  Showplace EVO Dorian Gray (painted, lower left) Ruled out

Option #6:  Showplace EVO Rockport wash on Maple (lower right).  I'd venture to say this is taupe or greige in a stain.  There's definitely a touch of brown with the gray.  Warmer than flagstone.  Of course, I have color issues so maybe I'm wrong.

Option #7:  Showplace EVO Hale Navy (painted).  Dramatic yet neutral.  But...will it fit the vibe I'm going for??

And just to muddy the waters.  Here's a pic of the flooring that's under consideration.

So what say you???  Which cabinet color is YOUR favorite?

  1. If your design plans remain close to the sane as you’d previoys blog post, you may want to consider what colors you’d like in your living room. I say this due to the view of your cabinets from the main area of the bottom floor. Given your floor and appliance choices, my pick is option #4. It’s so versatile and I’m crazy about it being paired with either the white quartz (crossing my fingers for you) or the butcher block. I think option 7 is charming too. Tough choice for sure, but I know whatever you pick will look great!
