Cabin History

A-Frame Mountain Cabin Colorado Valley View
A-Frame Exterior - June 2017

The A-Frame cabin has been “in the family” since the late 90’s.  Although it functions as-is, we decided to look into improvements to make it more comfortable and usable for a family of 4 with occasional guests.

We considered demolishing everything excluding the foundation, however, we decided on a remodel instead.  Cost played the biggest factor in the decision.  We’ve realized there’s so much to love about our little A-frame cabin.  This is where JD & I first said “I love you.”, where we buried JD’s sweet dog, Bear.   There’s something to be said about preserving the funkiness and simplicity of the A-frame form.  A McMansion it’s not, a peaceful place to disconnect from busyness and reconnect with my family it most certainly is.

So in late 2016, we contacted our County Building Office to discuss the process of remodeling.  At that time, we were shocked to find out the house never went thru a final inspection when it was originally built in the mid-1970’s.  After an entire day with almost every department in the County, we determined that no records exist showing a final inspection and that we needed to follow the procedure for modification and approval of a non-permitted structure.  Fast forward (though it feels like slow forward) to summer 2017 when we finally begin the process of updating the cabin and documenting it through this blog.
