Kitchen Decisions and Indecisions

April 2018

Wanted to give an update on the last post regarding the kitchen cabinet colors.

We made a decision!  I lost count of the votes on each option, actually I didn't keep track at all.  But I'm fairly confident it was in the top 2.  Once we put it in the room next to flooring and countertop options it was obvious which was the clear winner.

Without further ado....here's our cabinet color and kitchen color scheme.  Sample flooring on the left, cabinet color, walnut countertop, and white tile/paint for the walls.

That's right, Hale Navy is the champ.  It's a timeless classic that coordinates with a rainbow of accent colors.  I also don't believe I'll tire of it within a few years, unlike my doubts with Ikea Kallarp's turquoise-gray.

We also decided that the flooring we were originally considering was way too rustic (see last post for example).  We wanted something a little less varied in the pattern but still something that looks like a real hardwood floor.  The one pictured above is a glue-down vinyl plank, which we don't want but is a starting point for color.

After some stops at the local flooring stores, I discovered that we are not in the popular crowd.  I know! Shocking, right?  Light color floors are just not that "in" right now.

Thus, our options were quickly limited.  A good candidate is Mohawk's SolidTech in Golden Delight.  It's definitely more yellow than the sample above and is a good mix of variation and solid coloring.  Does anybody else see colors within colors (like the pink above)??  In any case, this flooring is taking the lead unless I stumble across another option.

Another pending decision for the kitchen is whether to do flat front or a shaker style front.  A flat front is definitely a more modern style, but the shaker is a classic that can be modernized with the hardware pulls.  Shaker is slightly cheaper but only slightly.

We had a designer at the cabinet store take a cut at the kitchen layout.  Here is a preliminary design with the flat front and shaker style along with a 24" range and our super tall 24" fridge.

Public service announcement:  24" appliances are WAY expensive.  They are almost double the price of a standard 30".  I blame the tiny house movement.  And NYC apartments.

Let the voting begin!  Shaker or Flat Front?
